Students make all kinds of educational fumbles because of this metaphor: cramming for tests, focusing on quantity of information over quality of experience, overvaluing passive-receptive consumption-shaped learning and undervaluing sustained, productive struggle, etc etc.
But it’s not just education, as the article shows.
I could ramble on, but it’s time for a TV show with my wife — so I leave the detailed analysis of this remarkable clause as an exercise for the reader:
“Some of the company’s most experienced personnel left before all of their accumulated knowledge could be fully transferred into Ford’s automated systems.”
Spot the metaphor, and bonus points for teasing out what the passive voice there hides.
