I have intentionally avoided purchasing a (so called) smart TV since they became a thing.
Part of the reason is that — they are spyware.
Apparently, there is now a court case about it.

@reiver In 2017 the US FTC fined Vizio $2.2million for doing real time capture of what people were watching.
That was 2017.
"VIZIO to Pay $2.2 Million to FTC, State of New Jersey to Settle Charges It Collected Viewing Histories on 11 Million Smart Televisions without Users’ Consent"
@reiver Our newer tv isn't online, everything comes through the Apple TV box. I should dig out a player for physical media though.
@reiver
will texas upgrade itself into, suing operating system makers like, microsoft, apple and google for spying users and data collection of users' data.
@reiver I have a fairly recent smart tv and put it behind a pihole DNS filter. That thing makes more requests per day than all other devices combined. And 99% of them are tracking oder ads related.
When I start it now it is unable to load its start menu 😂 but normal tv and hdmi input still works.

@reiver@mastodon.social yep, still searching for the elusive dumb TV (that also supports HDMI and 4k) for when my current TV kicks the bucket.
