#RichardGrenell, the Kennedy Center’s president, sent the letter after the musician, #ChuckRedd, canceled the concert in protest of the site’s “new” name, the Trump-Kennedy Center.

#RichardGrenell, the Kennedy Center’s president, sent the letter after the musician, #ChuckRedd, canceled the concert in protest of the site’s “new” name, the Trump-Kennedy Center.
Redd had hosted the show for nearly 2 decades. But he said he would not hold the concert after the members of the center’s board of trustees, handpicked by #Trump, voted to change the name — though it is not in their power to do so.
Grenell, whom Trump appointed to lead the #KennedyCenter as part of his 2nd-term takeover of the institution, asserted that Redd had engaged in “sad bullying tactics employed by certain elements on the left.” [who is the bully?]
“Your decision to withdraw at the last moment — explicitly in response to the Center’s recent renaming, which honors President Trump’s extraordinary efforts to save this national treasure — is classic intolerance and very costly to a non-profit Arts institution,” Grenell ridiculously wrote.
He added, “This is your official notice that we will seek $1 million in damages from you for this political stunt.”
@Nonilex There are some points to be made:
1. Grenell's letter, should it reach an actual legal complaint, could be answered by an anti-SLAPP motion (DC has an anti-SLAPP statute.)
2. If Redd gets part of the ticket sales then he can counterclaim that the name change is a material breach of the the contract in that it repels potential ticket buyers and thus hurts Redd.
3. Both anti-slapp and counterclaim open the door to discovery into Grenell's actions and also may block Grenell's ability to simply drop the action and walk away.

The letter was sent Friday, according to the #KennedyCenter, which provided a copy to The New York Times. The Associated Press previously reported on the letter.
Mr. Redd did not immediately reply to a request for comment Friday night.
Until this year, the Kennedy Center was governed by a bipartisan board, but #Trump fired all trustees who were appointed by Democrats.
…The renaming of the #KennedyCenter prompted a lawsuit from Rep #JoyceBeatty, Democrat of Ohio, correctly asserting that an act of #Congress is required to change the name.
In 1964, Congress designated the center as a memorial to President John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated a year earlier. It opened in 1971 with the premiere performance of Leonard Bernstein’s “Mass,” which was commissioned by Kennedy’s widow, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
@Nonilex sounds perfectly reasonable. Public events are a joint effort between the performer and the venue and the venue changed their name. By doing so they have irritated the contract with him so I think he’s perfectly justified.
