@vicgrinberg haha forget it though. After two years of Chinese classes and a bunch of intensive courses I moved to China and the only word I could read on the menu of the noodle place I went to on the first night was 面 (noodles). Also ask me about the time I accidentally ordered turtle 😖because that variety is called “mud fish”
@vicgrinberg
I think that's why so many Chinese restaurants have illustrated menus!
@dancingtreefrog not the less westernized Chinese places I've experienced - most of those just come with two menus 😞
@vicgrinberg Ah. Not familiar with Chinese restaurants outside of Hawaii, where many aren't westernized much at all. Thanks.

@vicgrinberg The thing with Chinese dish names is that they are quite idiomatic, which is why translate apps fail. So even if you know that the characters 回鍋肉 means "return pot meat" you still wouldn't know what it is except it is meat, which is pork unless otherwise specified.
@vicgrinberg if you are bold, just point at one cheap, one medium priced and one expensive dish on the menu ;-)
@Cookiemonster it's a way, but I also have clear preferences (I will eat almost anything but I also love Sichuan Chinese) so I'd actually prefer to know what I order 😅
