" #ICE does not move like the gestapo, they move like slave patrols."

This is home grown terrorism..

Source: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DTb2VBJkUim/

I can't unsee this now. I can't unsee slaver behavior in #ICE tactics. It makes way more sense, the Gestapo were copying *them*.

Ashley B on Instagram: "People reach for the Gestapo comparison because it sounds extreme and foreign. It lets white Americans pretend this kind of policing came from somewhere else. But ICE looks closer to slave patrols because that’s our history. Local enforcement. Racialized suspicion. Vague authority. Taking people first, justifying it later. Gestapo is a warning. Slave patrols are a mirror.

@mousey The German Nazis of the 1930 admired and modelled their ideology and objectives on the white Supremacist USA.

@mousey Gestapo, slave patrols, SS... Does it matter? SS works best for me as a European and like she says Gestapo works better in the USA. The main thing is how these groups arise, and that they could arise anywhere, maybe? Is there a way to protect ourselves, making sure these gangs or murders don't arise? Or do we need to always stay vigilante, always watch for the signs... what signs?

As someone from Germany, I didn't know much about slave patrols, but after reading a little about it, I think it makes a lot of sense.

Well, probably the part about slave patrols being something, that has affected the families of many people in the US - either as victims, or as perpetuators - instead of being a somehow foreign concept, resonates well within many Germans.

I mean many of us here have grandparents or great grandparents, who have been part of or been victims of the Nazi regime and their organizations.

So very, very true. And then it was turned into the virginia territory census enforcement shipping 'indians' (native, spanish, or french) to reservations and anyone with a drop of black blood to the auction lot. Purpose being to clear what had been the louisiana territory fo 'white' settlers. Bet they left that out of your american history class.

@mousey it's also not mutually exclusive. Hitler drew both from foreign influences (US, S. Africa, Ottoman Empire and others) as well as Germany's own history of pogroms and the genocide it carried out of Nama and Herera people in what is now Namibia. The literaly neonazis in the Trump admin are of course both influenced by the US's own history but they're also influenced by the Nazis. Genocides are never *just* high modern things. There's often a great deal of vigilante violence involved.

@mousey but none of this is disagreeing with what she's saying. I think Americans often find it rhetorically useful to use foreign examples for shock value. And it is very important to note the continuity with our own past. Not far from me are the ruins of a military installation that was involved in the US federal government oppressing Northern Paiute people (Fort Churchill). The way ICE is deliberately (imo) kidnapping indigenous people shows how little things have changed.

@mbirth @sloanlance Well, wouldn't know about that.

Good thing its still an important message, I'm standing by my post for the content at this point.

I appreciate your observations.

It makes the sentiment in the post no less true, even if the presenter is somehow artificial.

I'd say "dismiss the message at your own peril", but you're not even American, so I guess you have your own stuff to deal with there, too.

Good luck to both (read: all) of us.

At any rate, ICE is much closer to the SA than to the Gestapo.

The Gestapo was a secret police, which can only work in an already fully repressed country where the overwhelming majority of people are ready to get others killed in order to stay out of trouble in the immediate future. And ready to repeat this behavior as often as needed.

The SA was a paramilitary unit, the first of the nazi regime, that, on top of the slavery background, shares far too many similarities with ICE...

@mousey ICE isn't following the Law. Otherwise they would identify themselves and use due process. They would read you your Miranda rights as the law requires.

@Ntropic @mousey They have permission to not having to follow any law. That's at least my interpretation of "full immunity".
That's why they are also allowed to coldblooded murder people as they like, not just kidnap them.

@sequundi @mousey presidential pardons also don't extend into the future and such a thing as immunity from the law is not a presidential power

@sequundi @Ntropic It's laughable to believe America will be standing in 3 years.

I'll be surprised (and impressed) if we make it to November mid-term elections.
