@vicgrinberg I'm in the US, so no one knows what my Fairphone is. I've had it mistaken for an iphone, and when I start to explain what it is, their attention wanders off to play in traffic. Ah well, their loss!

@vicgrinberg Having Fairphone is somehow a self-manifest. If you know what it is, you already know its owner a little. Right now I didn't have luck of meeting another Fairphone owner. Need to explain what is it and why to everyone when talking about phones.

@florian it's meh compared to the Samsung galaxy (but I still have that one as a work phone, so I now decoupled phone and fancy photos - that said, I have feelings about photos, so this may be colored by it ...)

@vicgrinberg that's too bad. I also have opinions about photos so I had decided against the fairphone it.

But for me it was because a friend told me about two years ago that the camera software is a bit finicky, so I was wondering if that improved. We never got to the point of talking about the quality of the photos it took though...

@florian I would suggest to try if you can get it from someone. The Samsung photos come out surprisingly well out of the box so as someone who loves photos but hates any kind if additional time spent on them, I love it. This may not be what yoy are searching for. But it's not a high end camera and it does not try to be; it's a replaceable camera that does a good job.

@vicgrinberg thanks. I'm not currently in the market. My question was for future reference. (Or if I break my current phone).
Two years ago I went with a google pixel (9?) because it had 7 years guaranteed updates. I should still have at least 5 years left.

@florian my problem was that my phones tend to break before the updates end. First one i dropped, second had a screen failure, third now had the battery die + I dropped it shatothe screen. Kinda hope that the screen and batter issues can be solved by having a phone where one can easily replace the parts 😅

@vicgrinberg do the typical Android apps still work in a Fairphone?

@davidsuculum they have a version that runs a stabdard Android and the e/os operating system one - I only got the android one, so all android apps run natively.

@vicgrinberg Excellent. But I still prefer simply saying hello to people wherever I go. Helps that I am older gen, aged 68, but am also an autistic introvert suffering social anxiety. But the joy of good connections can be so stunning.

By way of example, one man I talked with was parent of child at my tennis club being coached. Clearly a smart fellow I mentioned my favourite board game Go. And discover that he was part of the Google AlphaGo team that beat Lee Sedol a top professional.

@vicgrinberg I bet, it was the same for early adopters of the iPhone. I fear it’s less the device or the people using it than the number of people. You feel like you have something in common that is somewhat special. But does that really matter? No, not really. 😊

@proedie I think the issue is that both stand for certain consume decisions. So in either case it's not about the device, but about what they signify (and that shows in the follow up conversations I had so far).

@confusedMiddleAgedDad I don't think so? But I also have the android version, not the e/os one. I'd have needed a bit more research and preparation before jumping to e/os and I urgently needed a phone after I droppe and broke the screen on my old one five days before a major work trip.

It's not a bad phone per se it's just underwhelming in almost all aspects.

@vicgrinberg @K4mpfie same here. My Fairphone 3 (2020) does the job so well that I cannot find myself a good reason to replace it. When I dropped it in knee deep seawater a year and a half ago and let it dry overnight I was thinking that at least I would be able to get a phone with a newer camera, but the Fairphone started up as if nothing happened and it's is still working fine today 😅
