People really need to stop telling me that, "for my own good", I should support the use of AI. Fuck off.

@cmccullough The stock market tends to disagree with them. The market is very upset with AI slop and empty revenue promises.
@cmccullough You ai bros mad that I won't pay protection money?
@madengineering I hope AI crashes out in the very near future. I know it will probably never die, but not shoving it into everything I'm trying use would be nice.
And they tell me that I'm going to be left behind. I've been unemployed for 2 years. At nearly 59 years of age, I've already been left behind.
@cmccullough you may be shocked at how many corporates now make AI tools mandatory, or at least highly encouraged
@mloxton @cmccullough I consider this a red flag and a great reason not to work there.
@grimmy
TBH, you are going to be waving that red flag at almost every company out there, and be disappointed to find that those who are not incorporating AI tools, aren't doing so out of a principled stand, but because they are backward AF and their processes belong in the 1800's
@mloxton @cmccullough That's funny because that's exactly my argument... I need co-workers that I can depend on to actually know their stuff and from what I've seen people create with AI is absolutely 100% not that. But keep preaching, I'll continue to be an outsider like I've always been :)
@mloxton Oh, I know, and I'm not shocked at all. I'll never get hired by another corporation so I don't have much to worry about.
@cmccullough I've held off speaking my mind at work a few times on gen AI use. Company culture is usually pretty open, but I don't really feel like I'll be heard on anything I have to say about it. My manager understands my position on it and won't put me on anything involving that shit. But, unless the bubble bursts soon and we abandon this garbage, I'll be pushed out of the industry and end up retiring early, most likely.
@SharpCheddarGoblin And that's another big reason not to use it. People are going to lose jobs.
@cmccullough what?!? Who does that?
@Karstan I have had a few people tell me this over the past couple of days during my search for a search engine that doesn't force AI on me. Even after I mention the ethical issues with AI. I'm over it.
SearXNG. https://search.n1cck.us if you want to try it out before standing it up. No promises on uptime for my instance - it hits timeouts at various engines a couple times a day. Just run the search again if you run into that issue.
@alatartheblue @Karstan This works great! I may try a bit of self-hosting. 👍️
Something to keep in mind - the project claims “privacy” guarantees, but I don’t fully believe them. In a practical sense if you’re self hosting, you’re still grouping all your searches to a single IP origin. It does strip out all the tracking BS, but that’s only a portion of the game. The larger instances have some better anonymity potential just due to the larger query pool, but then you’ve just offloaded trust to the 3rd party.
