@leanderlindahl@social.folkdata.se @_elena@mastodon.social # LibreClassroom sounds good, it doesn't seem like a thing that would need to be EU only (as long as solutions are able to be hosted in the EU). I'd be interested in this as well.

@leanderlindahl I second the use of Moodle as it is "self-hostable". I managed to self-host my own mock classes, just because I was bored and I wanted to see how it worked lol. There is also an integration with Jitsi that can effectively replace Teams/Google Meet, and all the other proprietary variants.
@leanderlindahl oh I'd be really interested in following this discussion... can you create a custom hashtag for it?
@_elena 😃 Elena! Yes, do you have any suggestions?
# EUClassRoom, # LibreClass ? It's tough coming up with a good one. The essence should be about "libre" educational collaboration tools...
@leanderlindahl hmmm how about something like FOSSClassroom to set up a big contrast to GoogleClassroom?
I'm from the U.S., but also interested in this topic. The school system where my son goes and I work as a substitute all have chromebooks and use Google classroom. In Tbilisi, where my wife is from and our son went part of the year to school, they give out laptops with Windows 11 and they're managed by the Ministry of education. It's really annoying, because I tried to install some software for him and it was blocked.
I worked as an ESL teacher in Georgia (the country) in 2012 and the school had some computers with Ubuntu and some with Windows. I sat down at an Ubuntu desktop and a student says "No no, this is bad. Here is windows." :(

@sam OMG - thanks for sharing this!
My child will probably be introduced to computers in 4-5 years in school so I feel a newfound sense of urgency to address this topic ASAP... and advocate for FOSS alternatives in France

@mavnn @_elena let's go with #LibreClassroom then🎉 😁
@leanderlindahl @mavnn great! following it now :)
@_elena@mastodon.social @leanderlindahl@social.folkdata.se To get the ball rolling, NextCloud do offer an education product (including a hosted option) and are based in Germany, I believe. That said, I haven't used it and I don't know where the hosting happens. nextcloud.com/education/
@mavnn oh wow! this is really interesting: https://nextcloud.com/blog/use-case-sib-delivering-nextcloud-to-2500-teachers-and-33000-pupils-in-brittany-france/ I should look into it more...
@jonassmith @jeppe Great tip. I "see" Jeppa all the time here on Masto. It'd be a killer of they're doing something non-google, non-microsoft in schools in Denmark.
