Replaying Command & Conquer reminds me of how bad I am at doing two things in parallel. 馃ゲ

Screenshot from "Command & Conquer Remastered Collection" (2025), depicting the start of mission "6A" of the Nod campaign named "Extract the Detonator (Ivory Coast)". It shows 4 vehicles and 12 troops, split up into two groups, divided by a rock formation between them. At the start of this mission, you have to carefully navigate these two groups in parallel. One wrong move (facing an enemy unit with the wrong kind of unit order) or plain bad luck can quickly result into all units being wiped out.

Other things I had forgotten about the game:

- In many Nod missions, you start out in the absolute "underdog" position, with only a handful of units and no way of building a base.
- These missions especially are very fidgety. One wrong click (or just bad luck, e.g. with the path finding) will result in all units being wiped out.

At least for me, these missions are impossible without constant saving / loading, at least in the first few minutes.

But I am still having a lot of fun! 馃檪

Ooof.

Yesterday I *almost* gave up on #CommandAndConquer.

Nod mission 11b ("Ezekiel's Wheel (Mosambiq)") was borderline impossible.

No base at start, managing two different groups on opposite sites of the map, constant airstrikes targeting the few fragile units available. 馃槸

There was no way for me to solve this the intended way. After many crazy experiments, I somehow found a different way though, luckily.

I think this was the hardest mission of the whole game, fingers crossed. 馃

It shows the base of the Nod faction (that first had to be captured under extremely diffcult circumstances) with several buildings and vehicles.

My winning strategy:

1. Ignore units in the south
2. Directly approach the enemy base with my tiny number of units, somehow capture and sell construction yard & barracks
3. Only then capture the abandoned base
4. Directly build a helipad and use helicopter to keep the base alive long enough to build it out slowly

Step 2 took an insane amount of tries. Capturing the yard unlocked the heli pad for me (which I think is an oversight, it should not be available in the solo campaign).

There was so much trial & error involved, in addition to game glitches and sheer luck. Not sure how anybody would beat this mission the intended way.

A bit frustrating: some of these missions require so much precision, but the controls & unit's movement AI are too janky to support this requirement.

I later read some posts about the mission (which is regarded the hardest in the game). There was speculation that changes of the "Remastered Edition" accidentally increased the difficulty. 馃
