The annual slapstick comedy of me attempting to make breakfast pastries in the oven commences. This year, it’s not croissants-in-a-can, it’s pain-au-chocolat-in-a-box.

I am hopeful.

I am filled with a desire to eat the raw dough.

A photo of part of the instructions on the box.

2. Unroll the dough and follow the perforations to separate into pieces. DO NOT EAT RAW DOUGH.

I have circled the exhortation to not eat the raw dough, in red, to remind myself this but is important.

I have also drawn a charming sprig of holly in the corner.

Oh fuck. Inside the box: a vexatious can

The instructions are inscrutable

The can has intriguing diagrams on it, of a can being wrangled in some unimaginable way. They are helpfully labelled 1 and 2.

Wot

I have followed the can’s instructions to peel it at its little arrow. Under the silver paper is more cardboard. I am baffled.

This has occurred. This always occurs.

The can has exploded. Pastry bulges out of its wounds.

@meljoann Yes, it does! Or else it stays stubbornly closed and you have to savage it with a knife.

Result. Pains au chocolats are easier to roll up than croissants.

Some beautifully rolled pain au chocolat, with my hand doing a thumbs-up in front. A victorious image. Or is it? Time will tell

Seven minutes of cooking time. My Xmas pastry hopes are dashed.

#food

The result of my Herculean effort. A photo of the pastries after a mere 7 minutes in the oven. Burned, bulging, pastries; chocolate exposed like its grisly internal organs after some kind of experimental operation

A photo of the instructions, clearly stating 12-15 minutes of cooking time are required for delicious, perfectly golden brown pain au chocolat
