LinkedIn “gurus” convinced everyone that saying “Software Engineer” is too crude, so now every headline is “Helping companies build the future 🚀” which means nothing, takes longer to read and conveys less information. How good.

@Daojoan one of the more frustrating things in my current job is when I have to look up some company's website to see what they do (mostly to see if they are a law firm) and not being able to tell anything from their website about what exactly it is that they do. Just SEO gibberish that tells me nothing useful.
@PaulDitz infuriating isn’t it
@Daojoan I have walked barefoot into a meeting with people from outside the company and introduced myself as a code monkey... then later my boss came in, introduced us all again, and I was "our senior guru" 😜
@UweHalfHand that implies junior gurus which I thoroughly enjoy
@Daojoan
Well, "gurus" explains it nicely.
@Daojoan I’d like to see the death of that fucking rocket emoji in 2026.
@Daojoan one of these days, when I'm feeling particularly ranty, I will explain why most software developers are not "engineers".
They can come back when they'll accept liability for their product's failures.
@slothrop @Daojoan In Canada, software developers aren’t allowed to call themselves engineers unless they hold a valid professional engineering license (P.Eng.), which requires a degree from an accredited engineering school, four years’ work experience, and successful completion of the Professional Practice exam. When I still worked in tech, I was the only person at the company legally allowed to call myself an engineer…and I worked on the design side of the house.
@slothrop @Daojoan I guess that's my main problem. I'm a Software Engineer or maybe Software Scientist at heart.
I write code slowly, because I want to have proof that it works. I always had issues with colleagues who just go in, change stuff, then see if it sticks to the wall. Then they call it fast and productive, until the bug reports start coming in.
Also, having no documentation on the whys makes me over analyze anything, because I don't want to break unspoken assumptions.
