@FinchHaven The design is not specific to #atproto (although the article uses that implementation as an example). The W3C Solid project ( @Solid ) uses a very similar approach with Linked Data. I've seen recent mentions of exploring this type of architecture for the Fediverse too. Do you know of any reason it couldn't be done with #ActivityPub? This is where the imagination is required.

Blacksky has already built their own ATProto stack that's fully independent from Bluesky.

Now Eurosky is making progress as they roll out their own PDS.

I see more independent infrastructure springing up on https://atp.fyi/network, including AppViews.

For anyone hoping that we'll get another wave of people coming to the fediverse once Bluesky folds/enshittifies, that might not necessarily be the case as people will have more options to stay in the Atmosphere.

I imagine a future where every actual article (and piece of audio or video) is an #ActivityPub item itself. So we wouldn't boost and reply to posts that link to this work, but boost and reply to it directly. And every news website is also a fedi server. So nobody like Facebook can get in the middle of it again. Eventually replies are redesigned to work as well as they do on Reddit.

I don't see how this could work as decentralized on #ATproto.

Case in point, from a recent AT Protocol developer call:

Reading notes from the event that mention how Twitter was an improvement over RSS in terms of user experience.

Another good example would be people switching from pirating media over to signing up for streaming services. It was the easier option.

With Blacksky recently achieving full independence from Bluesky, and other projects following behind, it'll be interesting to see who will handle federation better.

#owncast is FOSS and awesome. so why did #ATproto people build smoke signals? same reason #bluesky didn't just build off #ActivityPub I assume. something something don't mention VC etc.
