My unit spent 397 days on the battlefield. We were shot at. We feared for our lives. Snipers fired from crowds. Improvised explosive devices lined the roads we were ordered to clear.

And still, we did not return fire unless strict conditions were met: The shooter had to be clearly identified, civilians could not be in the line of fire, and lethal force had to be the last resort.

Why? Because that was not our mission.

We were governed by Rules of Engagement, the Uniform Code of Military Justice, and the War Crimes Act.

Another #NationalGuard member, having heard the shots, pulled out his service weapon & shot Lakanwal, who fell to the ground & was quickly detained, court records say.

#SarahBeckstrom, one of the National Guard members who was shot in the back of the head, was pronounced dead the next day. The other member, Andrew Wolfe, is still in recovery.

Lakanwal worked with the #CIA for over a decade in #Afghanistan before the #US #military withdrew from the country. He came to the US in 2021.

#Hegseth issued a formal letter of censure last month reprimanding #MarkKelly for comments in a social media video from several Democratic lawmakers in which they said members of the #military weren’t always obligated to follow commands from superiors.
