🧵 When two friends and me started developing our first game in the late 1980s, I had written a short sad story for the intro. Our composer Ramon Braumuller made this fitting chiptune with our SIDmon music editor. The file is 38 Kilobytes, including tiny sound samples. We never finished that game though. 😊

To make a Mac, I'm using a Pi Zero 2 W, a Waveshare 2.8" DPI LCD, and the MacintoshPi image which includes Basillisk II and SheepShaver already installed, and they work without X11 running, perfect for the thin-resourced Pi Zero.

One thing that was missing was AppleTalk support but I solved that by installing sheep_net from these instructions. And works over WiFi!

A REAL SoundBlaster AWE64 in a briefcase. With 28MB RAM expansion. Designed for Cubic Player. Running FreeDOS. Vortex86 CPU / 512MB RAM. Battery powered, basically a laptop you'd never take to an airport 😆

So sheep_net seems to work great for AppleTalk traffic but struggles with TCP/IP. It'll work for a few seconds then stop.

Curiously, running tcpdump on the machine causes it work, presumably because it puts the interface into promiscuous mode. And enabling promiscuous mode manually also works.

No mention of that on the project page, but that was 10 years ago.

Okay, folks, as you know, I'm watching an anime "16-bit sensation", a show about NEC PC-98 nostalgia. It made me power up my PC-9821 Aile and boot into DOS/V, and finally try to launch some high-end PC-98 games. And I am speechless. Even on an LCD screen from mid-90s, the art is legendary.

PC-98 series is a special beast. Conceived by NEC as a business computer, the first models were based on Intel's powerful 8086 (the year was 1982). Unlike IBM PC clones, PC-98 supported Japanese out of the box, with complicated input system and thousands of kanji. To make the kanji look good, or, rather, at least minimally readable, the computer's graphics was 640x400 in 16 colours.

As you can imagine, adding Japanese support to a regular PC is hard. No one could do it, and NEC PC-98 became the biggest thing.

For PC games, it made all the difference.

I have started soldering and assembling some #BurgerDisk units for the kickstarter... But I've run out of Arduinos and will soon be out of PCBs, and MicroSD modules. I'll have to wait for the postman to continue!
