My husband's aunt had polio. She survived, then struggled with post-polio syndrome. (The surviving nerves to her legs got exhausted doing all the work with fewer nerves. ) We're so so close to eliminating polio. That vaccine is given in childhood, too.

Cervical cancer used to kill a bigger percentage of women than breast cancer does today. Pap smears/ early detection lowered the risk, and the current generation will see their risk plummet thanks to the HPV #vaccine.
