Canada has opened its first diplomatic outpost in Greenland in a show of solidarity with the territory. @cbcnews explains who was there for the ceremony in Greenland's capital Nuuk, including a delegation of 60 Canadian Inuit. "We feel deeply connected with the Inuit of Canada,” Greenland's Minister of Business Naaja Nathanielsen said. "For us, this is more than just about collaboration on a more diplomatic level, it's also about kinship.”

“Simon, who grew up in Nunavik in northern Quebec, is the first Canadian governor general to visit Greenland since 1982.
But her exposure to the Arctic territory began decades ago, she said, when she would hear Greenlandic Inuit songs as a child through her grandmother's shortwave radio.
"She would say: 'These are our relatives who live in faraway lands. We are all one people,'" Simon recalled at the annual Arctic Frontiers conference this week in Norway, shortly before her trip to Nuuk.”

#Greenland’s strategic position in seven maps
“Greenland’s closest neighbour is #Canada, & at its narrowest point, between the Nares Strait, the two countries are only 26km (16 miles) apart.
Canada & Greenland also technically share a land border, having settled a decades-long dispute over Hans Island, a small rock in the strait, by dividing it in half.”

Vättarnas Armé/Army of the Vættir (2025)
I caught a glimpse of these guys shortly after hearing about the Greenland stuff for the first time back in January 2025. I thought they were vättar (Icelandic: vættir), but people informed that vättar are actually usually smaller. I asked around and someone told me that these might be nissar. Anyway, beings (väsen) of this nature rarely show themselves at all, so I was quite shocked.

This is typical colonial attitude, even on the #Fediverse, Indigenous needs can wait...
“When geopolitics gets heated, you get into this mode where state leaders start talking and the first thing that is forgotten is Indigenous peoples,” said Retter. “There’s always something more important. It’s like, ‘Yeah we value Indigenous peoples or we respect the rights of Indigenous peoples, but right now this is more important.”

“I left Greenland and Denmark changed. Not radicalized. Clarified. … Trump cannot sever what history, blood, and shared sacrifice have built. He can wound it. He can disgrace it. But he cannot own it.”

“The Danish and Greenlandic people are not angry at America. They are grieving for it. They understand that Trump is an illegitimate representation of the country they once trusted with their sons and daughters’ lives. They watch in horror as Americans are brutalized, as Minnesotans are executed, as sovereignty is threatened, as democratic norms collapse in real time. And still, they choose grace.”
