Matt Ferrell has an inspiring new video out explaining all the advances in solar technology in 2025. From putting crystals in front of solar panals, to putting sponges on the back — it all increases efficiency, while cost keeps dropping.

We have a bright solar future ahead of us!

Still coming down hard at times up here. 11.2" total so far.

My batteries are at 62% after 42hrs without solar. I will definitely make it through another day and night. And possibly make it through to potential sun on Saturday with some conservation.

But we are likely to run the generator for another couple hours today for camp's batteries, and I will definitely tap into it after the first hour to recoup about 5%. Same will probably happen Friday for 5%. and I can always plug into our backup batteries to get another 5-10%.

I'm fairly well sized with my 16kWh bank and current usage. About 3.5 days capacity. Most SoCal storms are a little shorter than that in duration - unless this 4-7 day stuff is a new norm. But when I get the heat pump going, that will change the equation. But I can also just swap to propane heat during storms.

Coal isn’t coming back. Wanting it to is nostalgia for inefficiency and failure. Coal gets crushed by solar, wind, grids, storage, geothermal & batteries on cost, speed, and scale. Even existing nuclear is cheaper to run. This isn’t politics or ideology. Coal lost because it’s inferior. #solar

Currently every 3 years, China effectively builds a brand new total US grid’s worth of solar capacity, and that’s just solar!

The lone honeybee last night is now with her sisters. The sun is rising and temperature is warm, giving them full metabolism and power. The vigorous honeybees at the feeder are collecting for the hive. Waiting on springtime to get here and plant a garden.

I remember growing up, planting 8 grape seeds across from the three honeybee hives. Those grape vines grew amazingly fast and were populated with the most juicy grapes birds and squirrels loved. Any seeds in the garden we planted were guaranteed to grow around the bees. Watermelons and squash were big. Vegetables grew without chemicals too. The bees did the hard work. I don't know how bees do it, but apparently they are meticulous engineers with flowers, giving the plants information how to best nurture the soil.

Here, there are many wildflowers many call weeds, but these plants are valuable food for birds all year, especially in the winter when the seed pods dry out and the nutritious insects inside digest the cellulose. The leaves on the ground are home to solitary bees, wasps, fireflies, glo-bugs, and other luminescent creatures of the night. It's like the Avatar movie. So much life here, even when most people don't notice it. I'm keeping most of this area native, just as life here curated it for countless thousands of years. I will be adding more solar panels and a compatible garden to sustain me, but that's about all the changes.
