@frank I get the feeling that's how that new Welsh instance and the #forkiverse have successfully done it. They're actually just Mastodon instances, but they advertise themselves as completely new social media networks. Somehow that's more appealing to people than joining an existing social media network like Mastodon. Possibly because of all the connotations Mastodon has accrued over the years, for good or for worse.

In the FOSS and software development world, the word "fork" has an extremely specific meaning, to wit;

Fork: to take existing software code, adopt it into one's own work flow, alter it, and in doing so take that source code and "fork" it in a significant new direction with new code that replaces the original, usually to add features or improve functionality

Now then, I was camping on the #Forkiverse

for a long while and it was clear from the convos that the "Forkiverse" was being presented as a fork of Mastodon in the source code sense -- that, even though Forkiverse is still running box-stock v4.5.7 Mastodon source code, and is not in any sense a "fork" of anything

All this said (again) I'm going to hit Post and mute this convo -- once again

@leanderlindahl I feel people had the wrong impression of the #forkiverse because the name.

My take is that is called #forkiverse because the original podcast was named Hard Fork, but I guess people take it as "a fork of the #fediverse which was an unintentional meaning.

@theraccoonbytes @_elena Are there specific measures I can be taking to help keep our beloved #forkiverse alive? Besides being active myself?

I wanted to share the latest Search Engine EP, but you didn't announce it here.

@_elena That was interesting! I like how they presented setting up a Mastodon instance as "starting their own social media platform". I suppose that is what they did, in a way.

Also interesting that they suggest the Fediverse's goals are old-fashioned, in wanting to go back to social media the way it was ten, fifteen years ago. Also a fair assessment... But what would be a non-evil way of making something new that appeals to younger people, then?
