Elizabeth Keckley (1818-1907)
was an enslaved seamstress who purchased her own freedom. She became a dressmaker for the wives of Washington DC politicians, including Mary Todd Lincoln. This surviving quilt is believed to have used fabric scraps from Lincoln’s dresses
