I spent a lot of this year on boats. I really enjoyed it. I have perfected the art of propping myself snugly on railings of boats of all sizes, trying to take photographs of birds and whales. A tripod is useless on such a boat especially in the chaotic waves of the Monterey or San Francisco Bay.

In August this year, I was on a whale watching boat in Monterey. The captain heard on the radio that several humpbacks were breaching, quite far away. He floored it and I pointed my camera in that general direction, not even having seen the whale yet.

I got this photo of the whale AND a bird above it.

Somehow, I’ve seen ocean sunfish three times this year. They always make me laugh

Being an immigrant is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. Cities on the west coast aren’t really my type of city, but I tried to lean into the spectacular nature on this coast. It helped.

Going out into the world to look at magnificent creatures, listen to crashing waves, the sound of 400K murres yelling at the same time (at the Farallon islands).

When the world feels fragile, I want to be more at home in the world. With all the creatures and people in it.

I think there will be fewer whales in my life in 2026. But who knows.

I plan to return often to Monterey (cat and dog sitting for friends), and will get back on these boats whenever.

Until then, thanks for all the fish.
