Belgium is testing “dune-by-dike” systems — engineered sand dunes built in front of existing dikes — as a nature-based defense against storm surges and sea-level rise.
Four pilot sites are underway, including Raversijde near Ostend. Experts say the approach shows promise, but maintaining the dunes depends on ongoing sand dredging.
