This is what 25 minutes in a car with 3 people & a small dog, windows up, air on recirculating, does to CO2. (Ask me how I know this)
4000 ppm of CO2 is more than enough to cause drowsiness.
Please don’t drive for longer than necessary with air recirculating.
(And please retoot for reach.)
#driving #AirQuality #CO2

A plot showing CO2 climbing from 900ppm to 3900ppm over 25 minutes, before dropping. Both lines are basically straight.

@BenAveling Was it a Japanese car? I’ve noticed they seem to often do this. In contrast my German cars will turn off the recirculating after about 5 minutes after selecting it.

@Heinke @BenAveling Japanese cars wouldn't do the same distances Australian cars do.

@BenAveling

I had an oxygen sensor until it became chemically depleted, but recirculation in the car would set off low oxygen alarm to. Not enough for dangerously low, but significant.

I don't understand the science behind it, but CO2 monitors can last a long time.
Aranet claim 15 years.
I've had mine for a couple of years, and I'm about to have to change the batteries (2 AAs) for the first time.

From what I understand, the cheap CO2 monitors are with the best quality, all they do is measure the reflectivity of the air with an infrared LED. The same basic physics we notice in the atmosphere. From what I've seen from a postmortem teardown, other gas sensors may require a consumable chemistry source between the electrodes and have a rated lifetime.

Ah, that explains a bit, including the long life. I knew light was involved somehow, I should have realised it would be LED.
