He seemingly struck a deal with the new leadership and publicly declared his intention to steal another country’s oil, which ultimately ended up flowing to China.

Contrast this with the narrative around Iraq, the talk of weapons of mass destruction, the coalition of allies, and the supposed delivery of justice, but it was always clear just how much political theater was involved.

The difference now is not in the substance but in the style. The orange man was unusually explicit about intentions that are normally carried out quietly and wrapped in propaganda and moral justifications and legitimized by dependent allies.
