@ldottxt three things: compost, make a compost pile from kitchen waste, apply the result in early winter and let the worms do the digging. Mulch well, saves watering over the hot months and helps keep the weeds down, pea straw if you can get it. Finally: broad beans. They grow well from seed and we save enough seeds to plant next year. The bean pods can be roasted, or you can steam the individual beans. They are prolific. When I pull them up I let the stalks dry and put them through a mulcher and... mulch!
