One of the best films about nuclear war is the TV movie "Threads" from 1984. Unlike most films about the topic, it carries on looking at what happens in the weeks, months and years after a nuclear attack.

This isn't "mad max", it's not a fantasy or escapist thing. It's an attempt at a realistic depiction of nuclear war done in a documentary style:

It had a much smaller budget than similar films in America and elsewhere, but it also had a much freer hand in depicting how bleak the world would be for the survivors. There's less holding back than in "The Day After" etc.

@FediThing Threads made The Day After look like a rom-com comparatively.

@WTL

The director of "The Day After" said they were being held back by what was acceptable to the TV network. They had to cut out some stuff they'd already filmed and leave out stuff that they wanted to film.

I think that's why there's a disclaimer at the end of "The Day After" that a real nuclear war would be much worse.

@FediThing I remember reading something like that too. The endings of the movies couldn't be more different, though. One's "we will rebuild" and the other is "it's darkness and the end".

Don't get me wrong; both of them are really, really effective.

@FediThing I remember it coming out around the same time as the US film with Jason Robards, the UK film was far more disturbing and down to Earth.

When The Wind Blows is very traumatising,. You get so attached to the nice old couple and then see what happens to them 😞

I will check out "We Kids From Schewenborn"!

@FediThing It was produced by the BBC. Public service broadcasting at its finest.

One has to hope public service broadcasting can survive into the future. Just heard today about the US public service broadcasting organisation shutting itself down 😞

@FediThing Yes I saw that too. It is interesting to reflect how Threads was produced in the middle of the Thatcher years; I cannot imagine it was popular with the government at that time.

@kbm0

Perhaps it went under higher ups' radar and after it was broadcast it was too late to stop it? If they'd tried to ban it at that stage it would have possibly made it even more sought-after.

It's an astonishing work, especially considering the meagre resources they had to work with in creating it. The production was so effective, perhaps more money would have spoilt it?
