A pileated woodpecker on a pine tree.
Its red crown is a stark contrast to the muted colors of the forest behind it. The tree he's pecking on is a pine tree, about 10 inches DBH. A couple of holes were created last year, but the newer holes have that light brown, almost golden color, or fresh wood.
The white splashes across the photograph are big snowflakes, which are interspersed with sleet falling across the region.
