# Stronger laws for tech firms to ensure you don’t see unsolicited nudes

Unsolicited "dick pics" are now a priority offence under the #OnlineSafetyAct.

> Ofcom will now consult on new codes of practice, setting out exactly what steps platforms must take to protect users from unsolicited sexual images.

This will be interesting. Will a requirement to use CWs be sufficient? Or will Ofcom mandate some kind of image detection tool?

Stronger laws for tech firms to ensure you don’t see unsolicited nudes

Dating apps and social media platforms must now prevent cyberflashing, as it becomes a priority offence under the Online Safety Act.

@neil good to see the UK adding yet another policy that we can't possibly comply with 😑

@aphyr

I imagine that one might need to look at the scope quite carefully and consider the proportionality of any measures, given the context of the server (if one does not simply ignore the requirements entirely).

@neil I suspect they'll recommend a small (multiple gb) image preprocessing tool for our small 100k users/month) websites that we all run for enough money to have an entire tech team and enough free time to browse a small (150 page pdf) of advice to avoid small (£1 million) fines.

Interesting to see how this will play out. In some circles/apps/sites, opening with a photo like that is... kinda not frowned upon? That's just the way it goes. Are those platforms going to be expected to stop that too? Some sort of "I'm happy to receive nudes" flag required? Who knows...

Anyway, that won't have been considered, of course. MPs assume everyone meets by reaching for the same piece of organic produce in Waitrose like a rom-com. People like Jess Philips just assume everyone lives their lives in the same plain, heteronormative way that she does.

@neil@mastodon.neilzone.co.uk lol this is Ofcom. Small websites don't exist and everyone with a domain has an army of lawyers. It'll be the most intrusive and expensive to operate option possible.

This is a rhetorical question, no?
