James T. Keane, editor at the Jesuit magazine America, is another Catholic voice calling on the Catholic vice-president JD Vance to stop disgracing Catholic moral teaching as he lies about the murder of Renee Good.
Keane points to obvious parallels to something that happened during the Reagan administration. Four American women, three of them nuns, were raped, murdered, and buried in shallow graves in El Salvador.
When this happened — the Pentagon-connected and CIA-connected national police force were later found to have committed the atrocity — Jeane Kirkpatrick, a top foreign policy advisor to Reagan, and Alexander Haig, Reagan's Secretary of State, lied about the murder of the four women.
Kirkpatrick claimed that "the nuns were not just nuns. The nuns were also political activists.” They deserved to be raped and murdered and their bodies dumped into shallow graves….
Exactly the tactic Vance is taking with his lies: Renee Good brought her brutal murder on herself….
Haig, whose brother was a Jesuit priest, said that if the nuns had behaved like those who taught him in Catholic school — meek, submissive, wearing habits, not "meddling" in politics and men's business — they'd never have been raped and murdered.
Keane says:
"If that rhetoric sounds familiar, it is because we are hearing it again. ...
Why the obvious lie? Because, similar to Ms. Kirkpatrick and Mr. Haig, Mr. Vance recognizes the potential for this atrocity to turn American public opinion against President Trump’s brutal campaign against undocumented immigrants," (continued in /5)

"particularly because Ms. Good is an American citizen, was apparently denied medical assistance by ICE agents after the shooting and, according to the video evidence, posed no real threat to the shooter. Not even the most fervent supporter of the arrest and deportation of undocumented migrants, one assumes, would defend such Gestapo-like tactics.
The answer? Blame Ms. Good for her own murder."
But:
"How long before it simply becomes impossible to believe the lie anymore?"
Some of us refused to believe it from the outset, because we have eyes in our heads and functioning brains.
