It's hard to overstate how unhelpful EU Commissioner #Séjourné's new #BuyEuropean push is.

"Car makers were absent from the list, however, since, owing to their sprawling global supply chains, they are concerned about how narrow the #MadeInEurope definition will be."

Of course they are. Good luck getting coffee and banana's from European producers. 🙄

Instead of using public #procurement as industrial policy tool, governments should use it to buy ethical, value-based & with societal purpose.

@ilumium I agree that the EU is often connected to an alternative reality and this comes across as a Trumpian knee-jerk reaction but look at the employment market with the American first hiring all over the EU even though it works against EU citizens it is rife.

@ilumium I disagree. Within the right confines, #BuyEuropean could be helpful in overcoming some of the EU's dependences (e.g. in the field of technology or defense). #Séjourné also explicitly called it a "European preference" - products which are not available in Europe (like coffee and bananas), would obviously need to be procured elsewhere.

@janblockx I hear you, I really do. Within the right confines, maybe. Do I trust Séjourné and other industrial policy people to set those confines? No.

Yes OK, coffee and bananas were only (imperfect) examples to show how it does not make sense to force-localise global production and supply chains.

Silicon chips, cars, energy infrastructure, software... IMO the goal should not be "made in Europe everything," that'd be prohibitively expensive. But: can Europe diversify its sources.
