crazy theory/hot take: the late 20th century and early 21st century has had a growing anti-knowledge bent because there is an underlying societal diminishing of cognitive abilitiy due to widespread lead poisoning from leaded fuel and other products.

Never mind lead: how about the problem being electro-magnetic energy from computers and phones which is scrambling people's brains...?
Lead is too Roman Empire; it's the unknown element which is the key.
