I just re-read a short story I have out on submission: been on sub for *long* time & I hope that ends in acceptance not "gosh we liked this but no."

The re-read made me cry sloppy tears.

I want everyone writing stories to know: your stories have worth, no matter what publishers say. Believe it.

UPDATE: they rejected me 😭

Usually, I send them right back out (go find a home, little story!) but I'm mulling self-publishing a collection of Weird Solarpunk this would be perfect for🤔

When I beat myself up for not having *The Novel* finished, I need to remember in 4 years, I've written 25 short stories, the 4th in a 4-novel series, a TV pilot, launched a podcast, published an anthology from authors on the podcast and... IDK existed/survived.

And now I *am* writing *The Novel*.

The reason that feels like "not enough" is because my brain is dumb but also because I'm a prolific writer who has, historically, written several novels a year (*plus*short stories), so basically Current Me is like "why aren't you as productive as Prior Me??"

Answer: fascists, they ruin everything

@susankayequinn Coping with fascists definitely imposes cognitive overhead!

@susankayequinn My most rejected story has been sent out 25 times. It keeps going out because it's also the one with the most positive rejections and/or it got to second round before rejection.

I've sent out 15 stories and 104 submissions over 12 years (but I had submitted and had stories accepted before that, I just wasn't logging them). Unfortunately, I also started logging around the same time I got sick with ME/CFS so my submission and writing rates dropped significantly.

@rubyjones I'm sorry about the ME/CFS, but good on you for continuing at the rate that works for you <3 Persistence is definitely key in all things, but especially this biz!

@susankayequinn Your stats inspire me to submit again - I haven't for a while.

@rubyjones yay! Although I swear the subs system is frustrating sometimes. Overall, though, I'm a big fan of the SFF short fic ecosystem as a general idea — they're the most author-supportive/author-focused part of publishing (outside of self-pub which is my main gig of course)

@susankayequinn

If you've got the collection set, do it!

Back when I sent stories out, I would keep them on submission until the right collection was ready to go.

These days, I just self-publish in my store (my readers know where to get them) and then release a collection.

@mwl Nice! Yeah, I'm still messing with the submission system, just sort of automatically, and I'm starting to question why. It's on my TO DO list for 2026 to sort out the short fic, figure out a series of short fiction collections and get them published.

@susankayequinn have you looked into setting up your own publishing house?

It's on my mind because a professional society I belong to recently did that so we could have more direct control over our technical publications. And a colleague set up his own publisher when he bought the copyright back on his textbook so that he could lower the price to make it affordable for students while also making more money per copy sold. That's been a godsend for the community that relies on that textbook.

@douglasvb I've been self-publishing for 15 years, so yes, I have a business (technically an LLC). I've also dabbled in publishing others (the Bright Green Futures anthology that came out last year).

I've even self-published my own short fiction collections before, so this isn't anything new for me. Although I'm thinking about doing a *series* of short fiction collections, so that's a tiny bit new. I have a ton of short stories scattered all over and it would be good to collect them up.
