Well here I am with my very first playthrough of Minetest, because I certainly didn't just die and lose all my gear from trying to tank a full sized African elephant naked. And I would never put the bed that I slept at in my inventory, making me instead spawn at a random location thousands of blocks away. And it's only those fools back at the Institution who think I forgot to set a home location that I could teleport back to. So instead this is my first ever playthrough of Minetest gee what an interesting game. I think I'll go walk a few thousand blocks over that way, where my bones were placed.

This time I have a boat, and with any luck there's enough water to cut the travel time short.

Assuming I can avoid the ice lizard right outside this tiny little shack. Those fuckers are one-shot kills and fast as balls.

Woah, is that...? An otter! A feckin otter! This little guy is the entire reason I installed the Animal-World mod, even though it has (sigh) elephants and (SIGH) tigers. No other Minetest module has any kind of otter, weasel, ferret, skunk, or mongoose.

Ooh, bunch of tundra cotton. This would have been useful earlier when I didn't have cotton, but now I could have baskets galore!

No idea why the ogres (specifically) come charging at you with their backside. Other dmobs mobs come at you sideways, I'm not sure what to make of it.

Managed to escape, got it to trigger behind cover on an island. Some pretty vistas here. I really should make some armor.

It's the settlements_fantasy mod by FaceDeer. Sadly doesn't include working villagers. There are rando NPCs but they're dumb and spawn too much. I just pretend they're monster villages.

Thanks, I hadn't heard of that one. Those villages look pretty good. I haven't tried any villager mods, wonder if any of them would work with these, maybe bringing some over to one of them.

They're really good, in fact! Tries to (mostly) work with the existing terrain, makes semi-coherent random arrangements of buildings, and has a small selection of POIs, some of which are really useful.

They're designed to work with the mobs_npc module, which has NPCs that uh... randomly run around and will say hi if you right click them. Also broken traders, who all only accept gold ingots. tbh not in love with the whole "trade for my invisible inventory because capitalism good" thing, I prefer mobs that can do work. Still haven't got "working_villagers" in a functional state though. Contemplating making my own mod about helpful critters who manage chests and stuff.

Yeah, IMO luanti already has a couple of minecraft clones, so I prefer mods that aren't trying to copy MC. Villagers could do other things besides trading, or could do different things than just being vending machines. Not that trading isn't also a good thing for them to do, but maybe there are other interesting ways to do it. I'm sure coding their behaviors and pathfinding is very challenging though.

Did you ever see the Tektopia minecraft mod made by TangoTek? It's only for v. 12 but I thought it was a really good and fun mod. Villagers would do their jobs - cutting trees, farming, mining, forging, etc. and put their products into a common storage area and other villagers would take the things they needed from there. You could also put things in for them and take things out for yourself. Could get some good ideas for villager behavior from that.

That mod sounds pretty fantastic! Unfortunately, it's a Minecraft mod, so most certainly will be closed source. There's also the Minecolonies mod, for mob behaviors. I was thinking more like "simple robots" where you give them work orders and they do it. But maybe less... logickey? Like "Here's what I want," instead of "here's what you do." declarative vs. imperative etc etc.

Oh and uh... modified (by me) to spawn on any soil, not just dirt with grass. And have a bit more loot, and diverse crops.

I could clone the git repo but that link doesn't seem to exist? Then I'm not sure how to install it in Luanti if it's not in ContentDB.

Hopefully faceDeer meant "AI" as it used to mean, before it turned to meaning slop from LLMs? Like you would call the code behind how mobs move and act "AI" in the previous sense of the term.
