@mjr asks:

Q6. Does anyone know a single pannier that:
* has a solid back board or rigid frame
* hangs on a 10mm diameter rear rack
* is reasonably water-resistant
* is patchable after someone rides into it or the bike falls over
* has shoulder strap(s) for carrying off the bike
* ideally has MOLLE band or similar on side(s) for attaching insulated pouch
* is sold in or shipped to the UK

A6. Ortlieb back roller does everything except the MOLLE band.

A6: if you don't need anything that special, the Decathlon Riverside touring panniers are ok, for the price. I didn't test the patching but I think that it is pretty much the same material as ortlieb ones. They serve me quite well but are bit too big for my needs so I am looking for replacement for them.

@mjr @bikenite A6. I have an Ortlieb or two that I think satisfy all of those conditions except the 2nd to last one.

I thought I'd seen one with a side pocket, but I can't find one now, so maybe not.

@ascentale @mjr @bikenite

Some of the ortlieb ones do have extra attachment points.

And they do just work perfectly.

eBay or vinted. The bags in my A1 photo all second hand . Panniers were still boxed but cos eBay significantly reduced - still a sizeable investment.

I got run into twice in a two day window with no loss of waterproofness

Vaude have pack which seems to fit all your requirements too. Again expensive but apparently similarly bombproof

@MatthewNewell @ascentale @mjr @bikenite this is not a recommendation because it doesn't meet the criteria - just a comment. I've owned both ortlieb and vaude, and I would say the rack fittings on the ortlieb are more secure. Couple of times over rough ground I've had the vaude pannier come unclipped

Hmm. That's no good. Thanks for mentioning . As the prices and designs are very much of a muchness - a thing like that from a real user is often enough to sway me in one direction rather than the other.

In the end I went for ortlieb because I got a great bargain on a 31litre rack bag. Which I am so chuffed with; sits nicely across two pannier and secures well, very comfy worn with shoulder strap across chest (20km w shopping no probs), normal handles comfy

@MatthewNewell @ascentale @mjr @bikenite that said, I did fall off sideways into a pond once, and the contents were dry when i got home despite having been fully immersed

That's a pretty good thumbs up for the bags quality.

Not sure I would have enjoyed the ride home with bike kit and bags all covered in smelly pond water.

@MatthewNewell @ascentale @mjr @bikenite i should clarify that it wasn't a permanent pond but a temporarily flooded hollow in the ground I encountered during a rainstorm. The water falling from the sky had already made me wetter than the water I fell into.

Fun ride, but mostly only in retrospect

@ascentale @mjr @bikenite Banjo Brother's Backpack Pannier [1] should cover most of those requirements, but

* there's no solid back board (though you could easily add one if you wanted and I've never had an issue personally),
* there's no MOLLE band, but there is a loop on one side for e.g. a light.
* you have to deal with USPS for shipping

@ascentale @mjr @bikenite I have an older model of one of these and I think it fits all of your criteria: https://arkel.ca/collections/commuter/products/metropolitan-urban-pannier

(also it's been in heavy, as in 5 days a week almost every week, use for 5 years now and is still going strong, bike falls over onto it or my other pannier on an unfortunately regular basis and I haven't managed to do more than scratch them, but presumably the standard cordura can be repaired relatively easily with a patch if it did rip)

They make a couple of other sleeker looking ones that might also fit those criteria, but this is the one I own.

#bikenite A6:
My Ortlieb urban pannier seems to meet most of that criteria.
