@blogdiva So, in a sense, the classic story of American Jewish folks celebrating Christmas in the traditional way, by eating at Chinese food places, fits into the pattern.

Oh yeah!
Merry Christmas, Aunti! 🎅🥰
it’s really wild to me that, when you really think about it, all the #xmas celebrations that we think of as American, came out of #nyc; and a lot of those celebrations were basically based on traditions from #Ukraine and the Baltics:
- yule logs
- bell ringing
- #redwork #embroidery
the other part of this story is that the most famous American #Christmas songs were written by Jews. ironically, there’s a Canadian documentary about it:
Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas

@blogdiva I had to look up how to watch this and discovered it's on Kanopy! Folks can stream it for free with their library card in many US cities.
@SeattleSanchez thanks for the heads up. it’s a wonderful documentary.

@riley yeeeup. and a fine tradition that i’ve embraced for #atheismas
@blogdiva Hey, there's rabbis who would argue that atheists are basically indistinguishible from just very, very, very Reform Jews.
@riley @blogdiva there's a very old story I read as a kid about a group of rabbinical scholars who stayed up all night debating the torah. As the sun was rising, they decided to wrap things up & get some rest. One young scholar with a clear voice called out, "Wait wait! We haven't agreed if God exists yet!"
@GavinChait @riley i love rabbinical jokes. judaism is way more life affirming, and therefore funnier, than the other 2 religions that forked from it. not believing in a hell has A LOT to do with that.
a #Jewish #Christmas #songbook
- The Christmas Song
- White Christmas
- Silver Bells
- Santa Baby
- Let it Snow
- Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer (which in the documentary they see as an allegory of Jews living in a world ran by christians)
- Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire
- It’s the Most Wonderful Time Of The Year
- Rocking Around the Christmas Tree
- A Holly, Jolly Christmas
- Walking in a Winter Wonderland
- Do you hear what i hear?
- I’ll be Home for Christmas
- Santa is coming to town
wow, that didn't take long.
blocked a fuckwad that insulted me because am pointing out that without #Ukraine and Jews of Eastern European ascendancy, there’s no American #Christmas
@blogdiva Saw that - blocked and reported
@blogdiva
I love this thread. Thank you!
Interdependence. All religions, all traditions, come out of other religions and cultures. Especially, Christianity.
As a woman religious, whom I work for, once said, "Christianity is only around 2,000 years old." She is Catholic and also has a Buddha figurine in her apartment.
@blogdiva
Yeah - that account was, well, something.
I saw that account and it looked like it was newly created for Russian trolling, AI avatar and all
@blogdiva How many of them were written by Irving Berlin? Do you know?
@artcollisions about 3? apparently, he and Mel Tormé dominated the 1930s xmas songwriting.
@blogdiva Oh, see, I knew he dominated, but I didn't realize it was only 3. He was quite the chart topper with many of his songs though, wasn't he?
@blogdiva
Thanks for outing yourself. NAFO SCUM.
@blogdiva Today I columbused columbusing!
@culturednyc i wish i could take credit but tis been an NDN (native american) neologism for some time.
