I'd never tried a Peloton indoor cycle until a few months ago. I was surprised that the leaderboard aspect (virtual racing?) made me want to try harder. I don't wish to buy/subscribe to Peloton, but I'd like to get good exercise indoors if it's hard to outside.

Q3. Are there other alternatives that have wider compatibility? are better? free? open? Or other alternatives you'd like to share? How do you like them in comparison?

@ascentale @bikenite If you have a Switch 1, you can get Ring Fit Adventure. I've been told it provides a decently challenging workout that will make you sweat.

@ascentale @bikenite So, so many options. Most require or at least are really designed for a smart trainer (which Peloton is not), which is quite a bit more expensive than an old-school turbo trainer. But search the web for virtual racing. Rouvy, Training Peaks Virtual, lots of others. Smart trainers and training with power are both deep rabbit holes. The DC Rainmaker website is a good place to learn.

A3. My old neighbour used Zwift and tacx but complained about the ongoing costs. She was also looking for alternatives and mentioned the Golden Cheetah which is released for Linux, Mac and windows under the GNU GPL - https://www.goldencheetah.org/
but she had not yet tried it.

Looks to me a bit more involved than the commercial products but this is #bikenite on the #fediverse so should be easy right!?

@ascentale @bikenite A3. I struggle indoors, I pretty much have to be outside even if the weather is terrible. And I have no interest in Peleton. #bikenite

@ascentale @bikenite Free indoor cycling apps include MyWhoosh (completely free, state funded by UAE) and BikeTerra (offers a limited free option). I prefer Zwift because of the large user base and well attended events, but it's not free.

A3. I've used Zwift which has plenty of variety and is a million miles better than my old 80s Tacx turbo trainer as I suspect they all are.

I also used Bekool (a month free with my trainer) but it was buggy as hell and Zwift is miles better. I think they got bought up by someone anyway.

I can't comment on the specifics of Peleton, etc, but re indoor bike exercise, I've had great success with playing video games while on an exercise bike.

I had some 30+ year old model from a garage, but 5-ish years ago got a ProForm 235 CSX exercise bike. Which I've been mostly happy with, except that there isn't a way to set it to show time only on the display.

Watching video is not enough to distract me from boredom and discomfort. Playing games keeps my mind busy.

The other advantage to this system is avoiding adrenaline hangovers. I sometimes get so intensely into games that I get all wired on adrenaline, which messes me up if I am just sitting on my ass.

But on the exercise bike I am using the adrenaline as nature intends, in muscular effort.
