The ship was sanctioned by the #US in 2024 for allegedly smuggling cargo for a company linked to Lebanese militant group #Hezbollah. The US #CoastGuard attempted to board it in the #Caribbean in December as it headed for #Venezuela, which the #Trump admin has placed under naval blockade [but they continue to claim it’s not a #war]. The ship refused boarding & headed across the #Atlantic.

#China on Wednesday said that US claims on Venezuela’s #oil were “a classic act of bullying.” Mao Ning, a spox for China’s foreign ministry, said #Venezuela has “full & permanent #sovereignty over its #NaturalResources & all #economic activities.”

#US to control #Venezuela #oil sales ‘indefinitely,’ #Energy Secretary says.
The energy secy, Chris Wright, said Wednesday that the #UnitedStates intended to maintain significant control over Venezuela’s oil industry, including by overseeing the sale of the country’s production “indefinitely.”
“Going forward we will sell the production that comes out of Venezuela into the marketplace,” Wright said at a #GoldmanSachs energy conference near Miami.
It is not clear what “legal” authority the #Trump admin will claim to operate under. As of Wednesday morning, leaders in Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, had not commented publicly on the #US’ plans.
Wright said the Trump admin was in “active dialogue” with #Venezuela leadership, as well as US #oil giants that have operated in the country.
