@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite #bikenite A6 I found #coffeeneuring a few years ago and enjoy the easyish challenge of finding places with coffees
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite A6. I wasn’t aware of that term, though maybe a I’ve forgotten if it’s mentioned in Frostbike by Tom Babin? I’ve ridden in snow, but these days I stop riding when the snow and ice hits the ground here. 😀
@uxmark @ascentale @frostpendeln @bikenite I think the term originated in Europe. (germany?)
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite Like Phil, I think I gained awareness of #Frostpendeln through @xtaran
I'm not sure of specifically Mastodon things, but there are of course various initiatives that cycle advocates do like Bike to Work, Bike to School, and I can't remember the "catchy" names, but there are initiatives about biking a certain amount per month, or reducing sub-5 mile trips with the car by taking a cycle instead.
The hashtag #CarryShitOlympics amuses me. #BikeNite
@meganL @ascentale @grammasaurus @bikenite #BikeNite A6 follow-up: Ah, right, there's also #30DaysOfBiking each April.
@meganL @ascentale @grammasaurus @bikenite @xtaran
What's the disaster recovery by bike one? I can't remember it.
@cainmark @ascentale @grammasaurus @bikenite Oh, yeah. Disaster Relief Trials. But it really seems very haphazard now as organizing it doesn't seem to make it happen on an annual basis anywhere.
It really ought to be a growing movement, IMO.
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite #BikeNite A6: Taking part in #Frostpendeln for 4 years or so now and it always has been fun.
I also take part in the national #BikeToWork campaigns, but they're somehow less fun as they just count days, not distance. And you can only count commuting, not doing errands by bicycle.
With @frostpendeln you can also track how many winter kilometers you did on a bicycle, on a pedelec (IIRC a class 1 e-bike in the US) and an s-pedelec (IIRC ~ class 3).
@grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite A6. I am only because of @xtaran !
I tried riding for a short 20-30 minutes in ~25 degree F weather last week. I had been traveling and was not well-prepared. My fingertips and toes were cold, but my core was warm and I was sweating.
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite #BikeNite A6 follow-up: Oh, right! My previously praised "warm" Endura gloves failed badly during my winter holidays, even with 2 pairs of thin inner gloves. But we also had down to -10℃ (15℉) and cycled up to 33km (20mi) a day, worst combo was 27km (17mi) at around -6℃ (21℉). Bought new Roeckl "x-tra warm" winter gloves during that tour. 😁 Also in hi-viz of course. (I'm though not so happy with my initial choice for the "trigger finger" layout.)
@xtaran @ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite do they also make them in 2+2 layout, please?
@FourT4 @ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite A6 follow-up: They do. They call it the "lobster" layout: https://www.roeckl.de/#Multi:B2C/article/10/10-110137
I though ordered a pair of their 4 fingers layout variant: https://www.roeckl.de/#Multi:B2C/article/10/10-110135
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite A6. Biking in winter feels a bit like cheating in my area, because we really don’t get serious winter weather for a prolonged period, besides cold temperatures and an occasional snow/ice storm. It makes me laugh that most of the group rides here cancel after October & don’t start up until April, because these are some great months for riding. I love looking at the photos from that hashtag though! #BikeNite
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite #BikeNite A6. Yes!! I am not much of a contributor to FrostPendeln, but I very much appreciate that it exists and I love seeing people model all-weather biking and learning more from them.
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite #bikenite A6 - never heard of it but looks a great initiative. We can’t get the roads clear for cars and pedestrians- little hope for bikes at the moment! As a country we are just not set up for snow!
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite Q6 I've never heard of it, but it's like just commuting by bike in winter, yeah? I never really understand making a big deal of these things but then maybe they're not aimed at #BikeNite folk who I assume are doing whatever they do week in week out without the need for a hashtag. If they get more people giving riding a go, that's a good thing, mind.
@pete @ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite Well, #BikeNite isn't a hashtag for the purposes of showing off or being competitive either, it's to talk to each other, right? I figured #FrostPendeln was the same kind of deal.
@iris @pete @ascentale @frostpendeln @bikenite I thought #frostpendeln was partly to show how many people ride all winter.
I think it’s in Tom Babin’s book, Frostbike, when he mentions that baseball diamonds and soccer fields don’t get used year-round, but no one thinks they shouldn’t be maintained. But bike lanes aren’t plowed in the winter (in most cities) because “no one rides in the snow”
#frostpendeln is a way to correct that impression.
@grammasaurus @pete @ascentale @frostpendeln @bikenite Ah, that makes sense, thanks! I did notice the streets got plowed but not the bike lanes here (grumble grumble).
@iris @grammasaurus @ascentale @frostpendeln @bikenite Gotcha. I’d wrongly assumed it was a full of bravado, festive500 like flex.
@pete @ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite The hashtag is just part of it. Another one is "summing up" the ridden kilometres. Not sure if this "a German thing", but there's different initiatives here were this a part.
Also not my kind of thing. I don't really take note of how far I ride for daily errands. It would feel antithetical to utilitarian cycling.
@pete @ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite Fully agree! You took the words right out of my m... brain.
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite A6. Yes, of course I know what Frostpendeln is because it is quiet known in my German bike bubble. But I don't do it on purpose because I simply use my bicycle for daily life to get around – whether it's cold or not.
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite not heard of that but yes.
In my 50s the Raynaud's really hit hard so as soon as it is even close to zero C I am using heated gloves and innersoles to avoid below
When I set out in cold conditions I can be both sweating enough to wipe brow AND have blue numb fingers at exactly the same time. The fingers and toes never warm up till I stop (5 mins is enough); when I restart they are better behaved and don't do the Raynaud's blood vessel spasm
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite A6: No, I have never heard of it.
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite #bikenite #bikeTooter #frostpendeln A6 I am participating in #frostpendeln (or frost commuting) for the third time this year. The motto is:From 01. November 2025 to 28. February 2026 we collect kilometers and together create more attention for the fact that bicycles are also suitable as commuting vehicles in winter. Motivating, fun and a low key positive attitude. And you can get a sticker.
@RayKuntz @ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite A6 Yes, like Racoon I am participating and this year you could really call it „frost“ as it is a cold winter for Germany. But we collect all kilometers on a website driven by bike or pedal assisted ebikes. So, even for fun and for shopping counts. And I do the „taunustaler“ battle for meters in hight between 24th and 31st December. Collecting HMs for a good cause in my middle hilly area.
@Jay23Jay @RayKuntz @ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite As a young boy living in Frankfurt north west I used to cycle to Hohemark and beyond to clear my head. But these days way to many carbrains spoil the excitement – and honestly my age and fitness too. So I take the bus.
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite
#BikeNite A6:
I wasn't aware of FrostPendeln.
I understand mdRzA but only because I'm trying to learn Deutsch sprechen. (I'm going to Basel Switzerland and Germany for a bike tour next year.)
I do #30daysofcycling every April though.
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite #bikenite NOpe.
I know how to layer up to ride to work and am still comfy down to oh, 12 degrees F or so, but sometimes that's just so many layers and laundry I just get on the bus.
We did have a "Santa Rampage" ride -- postponed when it was actually windy and snowing. It's not wise to not respect mother nature.
@ascentale @frostpendeln @bikenite I got interested in #frostpendeln because the idea of riding all year is appealing. Tom Babin’s excellent book, Frostbike, has encouraged me too. In this part of the country we don’t have what we need to ride all year (plowed bike lanes, fr’instance) but eventually I think cities will adapt.
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite #BikeNite A6. Ich weiße das Wort nicht. Wie heißt das auf Englisch? (Googlefragen...) So.
Aber jetzt ist meinen fünfsten Winter ohne Auto.
Never heard of it, had to look it up. I'm now in my fifth Winter without a car.
re: your apologies - it's not you, it's our grammar that's at fault/ a bi…t difficult to learn. ;)
@47363 @ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite Only the genders and cases/declensions/conjugations are difficult to remember. The sentence structure is simple for native English speakers.
Exactly that. Genders, cases, declensions, and conjugations. Must be so difficult to get your head around when you grow up with "it" for things and - from a German perspective - hardly any genders and cases/ declensions!
@47363 @ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite It's not hard for me, being German American and growing up with my German grandmother and great-grandmother. It's only that I am out of practice, so while I remember sentence structure, my vocabulary is mostly forgotten. 40 years ago, I was a top student in high school, and won the Goethe Institut German language cultural examination competition.
@gcvsa @47363 @ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite You people are bringing it all back to mind: aus außer bei mit nach seit von zu gegenüber ...
It was four decades ago. The woman I was dating at the time had grown up in Switzerland (missionary kid), and she was always astounded at my Hochdeutsch pronunciation. (Germans would probably be astounded, too, but not in the same sense .. )
"it's not that hard"?
Ah, "German American". Yes, having heard German spoken as a child (I assume) must make it much easier.
And it's a pity when such an achievement gets, well, a bit rusty because of lack of practice. But then, there are so many interesting things in life; you can't pursue them all.
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite A6. Familiar, and with it is Mit dem Rad zur Arbeit #mdrza . Biketober is "big" in Atlanta, but not sure about anything else.
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite
A6. Found out about just recently. I've been using #FrostBike and #WinterBike too.
#BikeNite
@cainmark @ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite oohhhh, I didn't realize #Coffeeneuring had a hashtag. (Coffee is my primary hobby.)
#BikeNite | A6
Very short answer: Yes.
Short answer: Cycling during the cold months of the year; documenting your km's.
Because the cycling season begins on 1 January and ends on 31 December, regardless of the weather.
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite A6: Is "frostpendeln" like... frost pedalling? I guess I need to look this up.
which is a NOPE i guess lol xD
pendeln = to commute
But the # is not restricted to mdRzA (with the bike to work, German grammar), it can be used for all trips between November and February.
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite A6 No, but you could say that cyclists in Portland regularly practice Nasspendeln.
@yantor3d @ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite Can we make that a hashtag too? I LOVE rain. I want to be outside for all of the rain. And when the cars and trains are having rain-induced delays is the best time to be on a bike instead, as far as I'm concerned.
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite A6) Sounds chilly. #BikeNite
