The media reports, over and over, how cold it is in the eastern US, but they're silent about how hot it is in the west. The lower-48 as a whole were almost a degree hotter than average in January.
And there's terrible snowpack in the west, critical for water supply, as what little precipitation has been rain.

@petergleick

And while they're saying "see there's no global warming" they're completely ignoring how far above average temperatures are in parts of the *arctic* where the warmer air should not be this time of year.

And of course trying to get them to understand that climate change has wrecked the polar jet stream is not going to happen.

Their 3rd grade understanding of weather (and genetics) is ridiculous.

@petergleick @kajord I'm having some serious doubts about the color coding in that image. In southeastern California, they're showing a blue spot that is remarkably close to where I am right now. It got over 80° today, so I don't think it's among the coolest places. Maybe bad data?

@petergleick Coastal Southern California here. The high temperature is normally 65⁰ this time of year, but we've had a long run of 80⁰+ days. It hit 90⁰ two days ago, with humidity in the teens.

@petergleick in #Portland OR it wasn't so much the freaky heat like yesterday as it was the dryness. We went two straight weeks without a drizzle.

Maybe it’s a good thing we have fewer visitors to Vegas lately, since we might not have the water for them… or us?

AZ: 82°F here this afternoon, and likely the first time in 14 years that I had to turn the a/c on in February.

@petergleick Colorado was on average 11 F warmer than normal for December, and likely January too. Some places have been 15F warmer than normal, basically all winter.

Yeah, it's crazy warm and dry in Western Oregon. That just doesn't happen in January and February.

This.

In Salt Lake City, home of the 2002 Olympics and maybe the 2034 Olympics, we've had barely a trace of snow this winter.
