Question for any #PeerTube users or instance owners who have opened registration to the public.

What is the average amount of storage space given per account?

I’m thinking of opening up my instance for new registration, and I want to know what the average space given is so that I can know how many people I can accept at my current storage size.

Thanks in advance. (please boost for visibility.)

@Mrfunkedude I wouldn't do that. A single person attempting to moderate an open sign-up anything... nope.
You will end up in a world of hurt.
YMMV, but...

@Mrfunkedude@mastodon.social @jandi@mastodon.social @lps@mograph.social @eloquer@social.tchncs.de I have TubeFree.org and I start folks at 50GB total and 2GB/day. I've updated a few folks that haven't even ask. With a S3 it's not very expensive honestly. $6/TB/Month.

@ozoned @lps @jandi @eloquer holy shit that’s way cheaper. I wonder if I can do storage separate from my host?

@ozoned @lps @jandi @eloquer ugh. Not with Fedihost it seems. Damn it. Did I make a mistake using them? Why are they charging so much for storage?

@ozoned @lps @jandi @eloquer of course. It’s because it’s “managed hosting”. I’m paying for someone else to do all of the maintenance work. Still. That seems like a big mark up.

@Mrfunkedude@mastodon.social @jandi@mastodon.social @lps@mograph.social @eloquer@social.tchncs.de I'll say, I do not think going with FediHost is a bad idea at all. But yeah, I have to do a lot of admin work for TubeFree and have needed a lot of help. Managed hosting is definitely going to be different. Changing your car's oil vs taking it to the shop and pay someone to change it.

@ozoned @lps @jandi @eloquer Yeah that's pretty much why I went with managed hosting. Let someone else handle the headaches. lol

Yeah. You can ask them if you can buy S3 and if you or they can hook it up. S3 is probably going to be more cost efficient.

@Mrfunkedude how about an experiment? I've proposed, on more than one occasion, that we should create instances for people to simply hold follows, likes, playlists and to comment without the need for an upload quota at all. Essentially just a database 🤷

You'd still be offering a great service but without the deep commitment.

I'd love to see an official server like this by https://join.peertube.com for people to test/play with, but I'm not sure they understand the utility of this approach.

@lps @Mrfunkedude Take a look at @HolosSocial and their relays: https://holos.social/how-it-works

@Mrfunkedude@mastodon.social @jandi@mastodon.social @lps@mograph.social @eloquer@social.tchncs.de @HolosSocial@mastodon.social this is really interesting. It's a relay, but references mobile servers. Are any that work with this? Maybe I'm not fully understanding though?

@ozoned @Mrfunkedude @lps @HolosSocial @eloquer See this thread, for example: https://toot.fedilab.app/@apps/115782120012514531
It's in the beta stage, but it's quite promising, have you had the @apps people on the show? Obvious next chapter if you haven't!

@Mrfunkedude I think I've heard the "creators" to "viewer" ratio of most platforms is remarkably high, like 95:5 percent.

@Mrfunkedude
Not open, I made some considerations. No concrete numbers though:

How much space and traffic do you have unused now?
How much more
- money would you invest, to increase dpace and traffic?
- time would you invest to moderate videos according to the instance rules
Any users that are reliably moderating new uploads?
Is/should your instance known for longer or shorter videos?
What quality do you expect to upload users 720p vs 4k is a huge difference in space. Also how often would a creator upload a video: everyday vlogging/live streaming? Or rather once a month 1-2 edited videos?

All of this can lead to a different answer.

I want to give back to the Fediverse that I love so much, and this is my way of doing it.

My hope is that I can bring on some people who really want to use their accounts and will help support the instance as it grows so that we can open it up too even more people.

Who knows? Maybe it will someday inspire someone to open their own instance, and do the same for others?

And if it doesn’t work out, at least I made the effort right? Better to try and fail than not to try at all.

After looking through a ton of instances it seems the average amount given to users is around 5 gigs. Which means if my storage is at 45 gigs, then I could add around 5-6 people and then if anyone wants more space, I'd have to solicit donations to increase the storage.

Fedihost (my host) offers me the following extra storage...

10 gigs comes with new PeerTube instance.
35 gigs for $6 more.
100 gigs for $16 more.
300 gigs for $45 more.
500 gigs for $72 more.
1000 gigs for $140 more.

So to get that 45 gigs I would just have to pay $6 more a month. That's fine, I can handle that.

I'm thinking of offering more space to people who are willing to donate on a monthly basis. Obviously I'm not looking to make any profit. Whatever the amount they feel that they need, I'll charge whatever extra it costs in storage.

(That is of course unless people are grateful enough to donate enough that I can just raise it for everyone.)

I think it's worth a try. Time will tell.
