For too long, the Christian Right has acted as if it speaks for all Christians in America."

"A recent report from PRRI (Public Religion Research Institute) may be instructive. The poll was done between November 21 and December 8—before the most recent violent attacks by ICE. Then, the majority of Americans opposed political violence even in the name of their own political position. But I think the outliers were the real story: white Christians, white evangelicals, and Christian nationalists."

"In a recent New York Times/Sienna Research Institute poll, a majority of Americans polled said they disapproved of how Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is handling its job.
But 36 percent do still approve. Who are these people?"

New today: "I regarded Pearland as a bleak place to endure as part of my sacrificial motherhood. So I was surprised to find a temple here where #women were both being celebrated and celebrating with so much joy." https://www.texasobserver.org/a-pearland-pilgrimage/
I read Judge Fred Biery's opinion in favor of Liam Ramos and his father differently than Dean Obeidallah does. He discusses Biery's inclusion of two bible verses in his opinion — “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these" and "Jesus wept."

I read him to be pointing out that the very religion — white Christian nationalism — that they are promoting to justify their barbarism and cruelty is founded on the example of someone, Jesus, whose teachings and life run directly counter to what they are promoting.
This is a necessary move for progressives to make. Those who are pushing back from within faith traditions against ugly applications of religion to justify cruelty deserve support.
Whether we like religion or abhor it, it's undeniable that religious bodies and religious ideas play an inordinately powerful role in the US public and political sphere, and it would be foolish not to engage them just because we think religion is a sham or toxin.
I read Biery to be engaging those who misuse religious ideas to justify the Trump regime's cruelty.

Obeidallah says — and this sounds right to me — that the point of including those bible verses wasn't to be religious. But he then says the point was to pull at our heartstrings.
In my view, the point was to challenge in a very direct way the use of religion by some Americans to justify cruelty, barbarism, and inhumanity. The USA has famous been called a nation with the soul of a church.

Are your power bills just too darn low? Are you not paying enough for ram and other semiconductor products? Do you really wish more clean water was polluted?
Well, have the techbros got just the capital and planet sink for you!
A website populated by purely agentic #LLMs, talking to each other, burning thousands of tokens per minute, a thing we all get to pay for. Isn’t that exciting? Oh look, the “ #ai has discovered #religion “.
No it fucking hasn’t. It proves that humans wrote the training, and dogmatism and heteronomy are biases that weren’t taken into account when symbolic systems are algorithmically generated.
See, I told them they should hire philosophers, but did they listen? They never listen. Ima change my name to Cassandra.
