The first night we shot auroras around the cabins, and got to grips with our camera gear in the cold conditions. Everyone did well. The second night we went harder, and ventured into the forest on a quiet little trail.
Under the moonlight we captured the fresh snow and frost that blanketed everything in white. And then the nordlys arrived! We kept going for about 3 hours, and Shellie served up hot drinks to keep us warm.

Next part of #aurora photos. Never thought I'd get to witness such a spectacle here. When the IPA (isolated proton aurora) visible in image 2 & 4 took off.... Wow. Words can't describe it. Images are in chronological order, panoramas of 8-12 images shot within 3-8 minutes beginning 21:30 UTC.
If you want to see a video of it: Someone near Stuttgart filmed that bright green burst visible in my last pic in *real time*: https://youtu.be/e19kAuC-6eU
Next bunch of Jan19 #aurora pictures for #FotoMontag: I would have gone home a happy bunny just getting images like the first one. The shock front of CMEs rarely causes the most visually stunning parts of a storm (especially down here in Central Europe). But then the sky cracked like an egg and became a silent concert of color and movement.

One more pic today. We set the cameras rolling on timelapse mode, then step back to enjoy some hot chocolate and just watch the show unfold. This capture was from one of the last flushes, when the ribbons danced rapidly to the north. Our entire fjord was light up with green neon.
Sharing these evenings with a great bunch of people makes it doubly special.

Everyone had just gone to bed when the satellite data wiggled. Within 30 minutes we had assembled by the shores of a frozen lake and setup the cameras, and watched the nordlys unfold. Slowly at first, just a gentle band in the north.
And then it all went disco.

Captured on the Lumix S9 with Sigma 14-24mm F2.8. Exposures were 2.5 seconds at F2.8 and ISO 4000.

This night of nordlys was nearly a week ago, and I need to make room for a bunch more captures. The forecast for tomorrow and tomorrow night is very very clear. Gonna need a good nap and lots of charged up batteries.

Snowy day today so we did some food photography and went through some of our older shots from this past week. This was a lovely little moment when the light was breaking out from under the clouds near Harstad.
I love the moments of transition, when we find ourselves with one foot in each world.

Space Weather
CME Arrival: An interplanetary shock has been detected at ACE/DISCOVR (L1) indicating the arrival of the CME which originated from the X8.1 flare late on 01 Feb. The IMF strength is 22nT.
A G1 geomagnetic storm warning is in effect for 05-07 Feb (UT).
The sun has been fizzing with solar flares, some quite large, over the last few days.
This makes aurora at lower latitudes than usual likely.
This prediction from NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center's ENLIL indicates that the largest activity may start tonight New Zealand time, but is likely to peak after the sun rises.
