Did you know it’s the 2nd anniversary of the 1001 Other Albums blog today?! And, here’s to many more! ...Like, literally, because we’ve only covered about 230 albums from The List, so it’ll still be a LONG while before we manage to spotlight each of the remaining albums, lol. But, truly, thank you all once again for taking part in the project and listening to the music, I’m immensely grateful for all of you.

Anyway, back to the music! Continuing our journey through the epic Fedi-sourced catalogue of must-hear albums, our next spotlight is on number 919 on The List, submitted by mimo. This album celebrates renowned Mexican-born/London-based composer, Hilda Paredes, with five of her works performed by the string quartet founded and led by her British spouse, the violinist Irvine Arditti, and featuring countertenor vocals by their son, Jake Arditti.

Estrellas de Areito – Los Heroes (1979/1998, Cuba)

Continuing our journey through the epic Fedi-sourced catalogue of must-hear albums, our next spotlight is on number 678 on The List, submitted by platenworm. Estrellas de Areito was an ensemble of over 30 Cuban all-star musicians, formed around an idea by African record producer Raoul Diomandé to create a Cuban version of the mostly Puerto Rican Fania All Stars. In 1979 the ensembled gathered in Havana to record improvisational jam sessions (descargas), and the sessions ended up filling 5 whole LPs. Those original albums were gathered and re-released here, in a 2-CD set.

retroViSOR – Chicha! (2014, Colombia)

Continuing our journey through the epic Fedi-sourced catalogue of must-hear albums, our next spotlight is on number 467 on The List, submitted by Cyrus. retroViSOR was a multimedia project formed in 2004 by Carmen Gil Vrolijk, a professor with an interest in video art and videomapping, alongside composer Camilo Giraldo Angel. Their use of images and video was just as important as the music, all of it merged together to both celebrate Colombian history + music and raise awareness about the issues the Colombian people and land were(/are) experiencing. Electronic music with bite, best experienced live but still a beautiful listen.
