A decade ago I decided to make a video of me trying a betel nut in Little Myanmar in Singapore.
As I have ADHD, I forgot to hit publish.

TIL that after the Malayan Communist Party lost the guerilla war, a bunch of them decamped to Hunan, China, from which they broadcast revolutionary radio ‘Suara Revolusi Malaya’ (voice of the Malayan revolution).
They did so until the 80s, when China ‘opened up’ and Lee Kuan Yew requested that Deng shut down that station. Shortly after, they stopped broadcasting.
This book is a collection of transcripts of those broadcasts over the years

I’ve never identified more strongly with anyone

#Thailand election 2026: can ‘orange wave’ break conservative grip on power?
There was some discussion about ‘why Singaporeans don’t take risk’. From the time we are in the womb we are enveloped in the fear of rocking the boat.
I think people from Taiwan, China and South Korea are similar in that regard: some weird ‘bell curve meritocracy’ beliefs mixed with some weird Confucian beliefs.
Many Chinese Singaporeans like me are also culturally Christian so we also have Protestant guilt plus Confucian ‘ethics’ (duty to family), plus new nation meritocracy nonsense. There’s many things I like about the country I grew up in, but the sheer terror of competition and achievement makes Silicon Valley striving feel tame in comparison. Just with less wins, because we also don’t take risks.
I’m always reminded of this whenever people from home want me to spell out, step by step, the steps I took to get to where I am, and my only answer is just ‘I don’t know, the opposite of where you told me I should go’

People who still think the USA invaded Vietnam to help citizens get democracy are fools. It was never about helping people suffering. It was always about more geopolitical controls in South East Asia. Vietnam was seen as an easier to conquer via invasion violence than other ASEAN nations. We also had many seaports access.
Korea, Japan & Vietnam were all places where USA imposed themselves, violently. Many military personnel left behind many mixed race babies & many other trails of traumatic devastations. The living, never sold sold our souls out, war survivors, never forgot what the USA did to my birth nation, Vietnam.
