The student protest in Quakertown, #Pennsylvania was peaceful until the #police showed up -- Including the police chief in plain clothes -- and started grabbing students and tackling them to the ground. The chief put a young girl in a choke hold.

Weasel-worded local news article that performed stenography for the police (though the photographs and video are useful):

A grown man -- the local police chief -- holds a teenage girl in a choke hold on the ground. Nearby are dropped protest signs and other student protestors, one of which is trying to pull the police chief off of the girl he's choking.

"Part of the context here is that Bucks County recently elected an anti-ICE sheriff to replace their pro-ICE sheriff. The actions of Quakertown police (which is separate) are best understood as a gang that sees its power to intimidate slipping and so has initiated a violent suppression campaign."

However, a video from the protest shows the peaceful walk, escalated to violence once police intervened, civil rights leaders and parents said Saturday at a morning press conference.

"Parents and community members are outraged by reports that officers used physical force against minors and escalated what began as a student demonstration into arrests and criminal charges," read a statement ahead of the press conference. "It is especially disturbing that the police chief was directly involved in the physical confrontation with a student."

The parents of two kids and another speaker said the students who were arrested Friday remain in police custody and were held overnight. Police chief "McElree was ... the one photographed putting a 👉 freshman girl👈 in a chokehold.
...

The protesters know they may face disciplinary action at school for leaving, the student said. "Most of us are ready to face the consequences of our actions.”

The kids are shaken after the altercation and the arrests of multiple classmates, the student said, “but we’re strong together, and I want to be strong for me and my classmates.”

Although it's unclear from public videos whether there were one or multiple men in tan shirts clashing with teens, the student said McElree was the only one he saw wearing tan, and that he was the one photographed putting a freshman girl in a chokehold.

Photos show the man with blood on his face and hand, and blood on the ground, after his fight with the students. Another video shows him getting into the driver seat of a police vehicle and telling first responders that he is OK.

"How it ended was really not the way we intended,” the student said.

"Parents and community members are outraged by reports that officers used physical force against minors and escalated what began as a student demonstration into arrests and criminal charges," read a statement ahead of the press conference. "It is especially disturbing that the police chief was directly involved in the physical confrontation with a student."

"In the chaos, some people had no idea who the man was, the student said, and started defending themselves against the unknown attacker.
...

One of the students who appeared to jump in to defend a classmate against the tan shirted man was then thrown to the ground by a uniformed officer.

The officer can be heard on video telling the kid that the man he went after is the chief of police — Scott McElree.

“He didn’t even announce he was chief of police. We were confused," the student said."

"The group was on the sidewalk near Sunday's Deli when one officer grabbed a sophomore girl's arm, as captured in multiple videos...

Suddenly, a man in a tan shirt, since identified as McElree, appears to charge into the group of kids and grab one who had been backing away, holding a phone. The student is seen tussling with McElree and hitting him his cellphone. Others in the crowd also join in the scuffle."

“He’s on a child,” someone can be heard saying in the video. “Why is no one stopping him?”

Videos show the man in the brown jacket speaking with police officers and then driving away from the scene in an unmarked white vehicle with flashing lights. Videos also show bloodied signs scattered on the ground.

The witness told WHYY News that what she saw was “extremely jarring.”

“These men were twice the size of these children,” she said. “It seems like the police made absolutely no effort to de-escalate the situation.”

Outside the police station Saturday morning, speakers said students who were arrested Friday were still in police custody at that time.

A woman who identified herself as Allison at the press conference, but withheld her last name, said her stepdaughter “was wrongfully accused,” and was then assaulted, thrown to the ground and put in a chokehold.

“We just want her home safe,” she said. “We want respect for our daughter and for the other students … who were there.”

WHYY News is working to confirm whether Allison’s stepdaughter is still detained.

"Both witnesses provided videos to WHYY News that they took from inside the restaurant that show a man in a light-brown jacket on the street struggling with a group of people who appear to be students.

“Oh my god, it’s a grown man and a kid,” someone in the restaurant can be heard saying. “Where are the police?”

The man [Quakertown #Police Chief Scott McElree] then places a person, who appears to be a female student, in a chokehold."
