The #oceans just keep getting hotter
Since 2018, a group of researchers from around the world has crunched the numbers on how much heat the world’s oceans are absorbing each year. In 2025, their measurements broke records once again, making this the eighth year in a row that the world’s oceans have absorbed more heat than in the years before. https://arstechnica.com/science/2026/01/the-oceans-just-keep-getting-hotter/

The #Scientists Making Antacids for the #Sea to Help Counter #GlobalWarming
Scientists pumped 16,200 gallons of sodium hydroxide into the #ocean, along with a red dye that made solution easier to track. It was the final phase of study on a promising yet controversial climate intervention, one that could simultaneously mitigate both #climatechange and another, equally terrifying consequence of #carbon #emissions: the rapid acidification of #oceans.

Nearly 200 nations pledged in 2022 to protect 30% of Earth by 2030. By 2025, 9.6% of the ocean is covered by marine protected areas, up from 8.4% in 2024.
But only 3.2% are highly or fully protected—raising concerns about “paper parks” that still allow destructive activities.
Mongabay chronicled some of the progress made toward protecting the oceans in 2025 in this list compiled by Shanna Hanbury.

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, with a warming impact far greater than CO₂.
Scientists are now finding methane seeps not only in the Arctic, but also in shallow waters off Antarctica.
Tracking these bubbles helps assess climate risks—and reveals unique deep-sea ecosystems that may offer clues to life’s origins.
