#SilentSunday #Imbolc

RE: https://mastodon.social/@iamdavidobrien/115997038734637603

Happy #Imbolc to all who celebrate - which is everyone in the northern hemisphere, whether you know it or not.

We’re midway from the winter solstice to the equinox. The great darkness is behind us; #Spring will come.

Even if you don’t mark it, you feel it. Birds are singing. Flowers appearing. Skies lightening. Buds bursting. And dolphins are cavorting (sponsored by @Dolphinchaz)

It’s the most joyous time of year in the #Celtic calendar.

#FolkloreSunday #Celtic: `In early February, when the days finally begin to lengthen and the land stirs after winter’s stillness, Ireland marks a threshold. Long before the modern calendar divided the year into months, quarters, or fiscal cycles, this moment mattered. Known as #Imbolc, it signalled the return of light, the beginning of the agricultural year and the fragile promise of renewal.`

That's January over and out, a month which many say seems to go on for ever.
It will be interesting to see the total hours of sunlight recorded because it feels as though the weather for the start of 2026 can be summed up in one word – 'gloomy'.
It started off it snowy fashion just days into the New Year, but by and large I am looking back on a month that has been gray, cold and wet.
Now February is here and as someone explained to me a few days ago, the beginning of this month is marked by the ancient Celtic festival of 'Imbolc', which is associated with the goddess Brigid.
'Imbolc' marks the slow awakening of Mother Nature from the deepest depths of winter.

The English countryside as January gives way to February, a time that coincides with the ancient Celtic festival of 'Imbolc', marking the shift from the depths of winter to the approach of spring.
