A wooden footbridge across a section of inner harbour, Aarhus, Denmark. Swirling clumps of white pancake ice cover the water below it. On the far side, warm light glows from the safe haven of Dokk1 Aarhus Main Library, a striking four-storey modern geometric waterfront building. The sky is cold grey with hints of sunset orange. The masts of two anchored ships can be seen off to the left. As ways to walk into your local library go, this one is reasonably storybooky, I think.

Pancake ice. Only the second time I’ve ever seen it. It's mesmerising to watch it bob gently on the surface of the sea.

Short version: Harbour sunrise with sea ice. Fuller description: Aarhus harbour, Denmark, shortly before sunrise today. Thick circular clumps of white ice cover the surface of the dark grey-blue sea: ’pancake ice’. Sky purple-blue with some white clouds. A tinge of orange and pink on the horiuzon. City and docklands skylines in silhouette. The clock face on a skyscraper clock tower glows dark pink in the distance.

It's Monday. But for the first time in 17 years, it's not a Monday in January. So that's something, at least. Glædelig mandag. Just sending you a postcard from #Aarhus, just to say that I hope this week treats you kindly.

Short version: a snowy pier. Fuller description. A pier at Aarhus harbour, Denmark, a few years ago. A blanket of snow on grass, some bare winter trees and bushes sticking up. Snow falling. The sea is grey-black. The sky is a blob of grey nothingness. Docklands buildings under construction and warehouses and cranes in the distance are barely-there grey, like ghost skylines. One splash of colour in the middle: the city sign that welcomes visitors arriving by sea. Spelled out in separate bright red letters about 2 metres high: A A R H U S. White snow edges the letters.
