@cmgrowell @ascentale @bikenite I’ve got a few wrestling making weight stories…

I get the not being able to eat enough to maintain weight (not currently a problem). For a while I had a dietician telling me to eat denser foods or I would continue to lose weight (recovering from chemo). I had to start making my own granola for breakfast (and I still do 10 years later). #BikeNight

@ascentale @bikenite A1. #BikeNite I wasn't following the olympics much until the Alysa Liu news. I like what she said about creating her own diet. I was talking to a local high school kid who explained how high school wrestling still does crazy dieting so the kids can make their weight category. Like not eating and wearing clothing to excessively sweat and lose weight before weigh-ins. That sounds downright unhealthy.

My older son stopped gaining weight his last few years of high school even though he was growing taller and we figured it was all of the cycling training he was doing for the bike team. He ate a ton, but couldn't take in enough calories. A lot of kids, especially the girls, don't want to eat as much as they should. With 4 practices a week they should probably be eating 30% more than their friends. Some focus on the power to weight, but you can't have power if you don't consume enough fuel.

@ascentale @bikenite A8. Rain. I had a five day drought from bike riding until Thursday, when I headed to the grocery store, it was chilly on the way, but I had enough gear on. Downwind on the way home! #BikeNight

And our last question of the week:

Q8. What did you see this week? Share a photo if you'd like. Cycling related or not is fine. Tell us about it!

@ascentale @InkySchwartz @bikenite A7. We had a trail-a-bike, my kid did enjoy it, but we didn’t ride very much, I gave it away to a grandfather who was very excited to bike with their grandkids, I hope it got a lot of use. #BikeNight

@InkySchwartz asks:

Q7. What are your thoughts on one wheeled bike trailers like the Adams Trail-a-Bike for kids? What about ones for cargo?

@ascentale @bobjonkman @CharlesSites @bikenite A4. I’ve had both, schradar always seemed sketchy with the rubber valve stem, presta seemed more robust. Not wanting to have two pumps, I just kept with presta on my bikes. That is no longer an issue with pumps that can handle both, if they were a thing back then maybe I wouldn’t have chosen presta.

I’ve heard of issues, but I’ve never had any with either kind of valve or stem. #BikeNight

@bobjonkman via @CharlesSites sort of ask:

Q4. What are your thoughts about presta vs schrader tire valves?

What do you use? prefer?

@MartyCormack asks:

For those who regularly cycle to commute or to run errands or to go to appointments:
Q3a. How do you plan your departure time to ensure on-time arrival?
Q3b. How do you plan for contingencies, like repairing a flat tire along the way?

@ascentale A3. Regular for me, is the gym on Fridays (also sometimes on Wednesdays), an occasional dr or dentist appointment, and an occasional grocery run (I usually buy groceries on the way back from the gym). For Fridays the there is no start time, no so planning, nor grocery trips. Wednesday gym trips are for a yoga class, I try to get there an hour early. For appointments I usually just checks maps, add five minutes and end up plenty early (I pedal faster than the estimates). I’ve not had to deal with a flat on the way, which I guess is good, lol #BikeNight

@ascentale @bikenite A1. Santa Clara, CA. I haven’t watched any Olympic coverage this year, I guess just busy.

As someone who has competed in nine world championships, the media focus on medal count by country turns me off. As an athlete, it’s always been about friendly competition, and each time we come together we renew old friendships, cheer on the good moments and come together to help each other when stuff happens.

We do also have a few races organized be teams from each country, but it is not a focus to us. The top placers are individuals, not countries. #BikeNight
