Actually I'n not sure if this here is in sync with the audio… so the audio is only from the #PocketScíon, the plant "played" during changeovers only. You can spot parts of the plant in the video under the "antennas" (in front of the double bass, in the dark) which were controlled by the output of the patch in #vcvRack via #ArtNet / #DMX mentioned in the 🧵.

(I was busy with other things, so there was only this one short moment when I quickly put my camera on a coffee cup as a tripod somewhere in the FOH…)

It doesn't sound at all. It's just controlling lights.

The MIDI input data were coming from a Pocket Scíon "listening" to a plant and also creating sounds directly.

I'm not so much sure what this product actually does and how much of it is really coming from the electric resistance of the plant. It sounds pretty much the same when you "measure" your body or a filet of dead fish I suppose.

🧵 So for weirdness' sake, here is the #vcvRack patch that takes #MIDI data via #rtpMidi, running on #UbuntuStudio #Linux, fed from #MacOS / #OSX over the network…

… doing some weird things with MIDI notes, and then outputting MIDI CV to #MidiMonster which creates #ArtNet networking messages from it…

… which then are converted to a #DMX signal in an #XLR cable usind a #ShowTec #Net23 ArtNet-Node.

🧵 So: How to transport #MIDI over #network the easy way?

The easy way is supposed to be #RtpMidi, which is built into #macOS / #OSX.

On #Linux, there is #rtpmidid, which I didn't try as it says it is alpha software. rtpMidi by MacLarenLabs does it for 12$: https://mclarenlabs.com

It does communicate successfully with #macOS.

For #Windows, there is another software also called rtpMIDI by Tobias Erichsen which I didn't try… https://www.tobias-erichsen.de/software/rtpmidi.html

It turns out however that OS X #Monterey cannot route MIDI from a USB MIDI Interface into RtpMidi. It is supposed to, but it just doesn't work, and it doesn't say anything about it.

The workaround with OS X on the sender side is to run #Ardour as a MIDI router on it using a #MidiBus.

And for those wondering what I actually have to do in the project?:

I will have a plant that is hooked up to a device creating sounds plus MIDI events and I need to create DMX lighting events from these. So the plant will make sound and light.
