At approximately age 10, we were driving on a blacktop when I said, “Look! They poured gravel along the edge of the road!” I’d just received eyeglasses, and Dad felt terrible that I’d never seen it—that gravel had always been there!

That’s what we started to do, attempting to use our feet to clear the west shoulder of Olmsted Rd near Hwy 68 / CA SR 68. Then we noticed the east shoulder and travel lanes were likewise strewn with many rocks!
